Before your first session

I’m not sure I need counselling. How do I know if it’s right for me?

If something brought you to this page, that’s probably worth paying attention to. You don’t need to be in crisis to come to counselling — many people come simply because they want to understand themselves better, or because something feels off and they can’t quite name it. A free 15-minute call is the easiest way to find out. There’s no commitment and no pressure.

What happens in the free 15-minute call?

It’s a relaxed conversation — not an assessment. You might share a little about what’s brought you here, and I’ll share a little about how I work. Mostly we’re just getting a feel for whether this seems like a good fit. You can ask me anything. There’s no wrong thing to say.

What if I don’t know what to talk about?

That’s completely okay — and honestly, more common than you’d think. You don’t need to arrive with an agenda or a tidy story. Sometimes people just start with “I don’t really know where to begin.” That’s a perfectly fine place to start. We’ll find our way in together.

Do I have to have a diagnosis to come to counselling?

No. Most of the people I work with don’t have a diagnosis — they’re just going through something hard, or feeling stuck, or wanting more from their lives. You don’t need a label to deserve support.

In the room

What if I cry?

Then you cry. This room has held a lot of tears — and every single one of them has been welcome. Crying isn’t falling apart. It’s often the first sign that something important is finally being felt. You won’t be rushed, handed a tissue and moved along. We go at your pace.

What if I say something embarrassing or too much?

In all my years of sitting with people, I have yet to meet someone I didn’t like once they felt safe enough to remove their mask. Whatever you’re afraid to say — whatever you think might be too much — it almost certainly isn’t. This space is built for exactly that.

Will you tell me what to do or give me advice?

I won’t give you a script for your life — that’s not my role, and honestly it wouldn’t serve you. What I will do is help you understand yourself more clearly, so that the decisions you make feel like yours. Sometimes I’ll offer a reflection or a gentle reframe. But this is your work. I’m just here to walk alongside you.

How long will counselling take?

It depends on what you’re bringing. For something specific like anxiety, I often work with clients over 8 focused weeks. For deeper or longer-standing patterns, people sometimes work with me for months — and some come back at different seasons of life. There’s no pressure to commit to a particular length. We talk about what feels right as we go.

What if I don’t feel like we’re a good fit?

Please tell me. A good therapeutic relationship is built on honesty — and if this isn’t the right fit, I’d genuinely rather know so I can help you find someone who is. Your wellbeing matters more than keeping a session.

Practical questions

How much does counselling cost?

Individual counselling is $130 per session. Sessions with our intern therapist, Alicia Dover, are $60. If cost is a barrier, please reach out — I’m happy to have an honest conversation about what might be possible.

Do you offer direct billing to insurance?

I don’t offer direct billing, but many extended health plans cover registered counselling services. I’ll provide a receipt after each session that you can submit to your provider. It’s worth checking your plan — coverage is more common than people realise.

Do you offer online sessions?

Yes — online sessions are available across British Columbia. I genuinely prefer meeting in person when possible (there’s something different that happens when we’re in the same room), but online counselling is a meaningful and effective option, and I’m glad to offer it.

Where are you located?

My office is in Langley, BC — and I see anyone in British Columbia online.

Is what I share confidential?

Yes. What you share in our sessions stays between us — with a few important legal and ethical exceptions, which I’ll explain clearly at our first session. In general: your story is yours, and I treat it with the care it deserves.

For parents

My child is struggling. How do I know if they need counselling?

Trust what you’re noticing. You know your child. If something has shifted — in their mood, their behaviour, their connection to you or others — it’s worth exploring. A free call is the easiest first step. You don’t need to have it figured out before you reach out.

Will my child’s counsellor tell me what they talk about?

This depends on the age of your child and what comes up in sessions. With younger children, I’ll involve parents more actively. With teens, building a private, trusted space is often part of the healing — though I’ll always communicate if there’s a safety concern. We’ll talk through the approach together from the start.

Who sees children at Joy on the Journey?

Children are warmly welcomed here. I see a small number of young clients each week myself, and our intern therapist works specifically with children and teens. Please reach out and we’ll find the right fit for your family.

Still have a question that isn’t here?

Please just ask. There’s no question too small, too awkward, or too “silly” to bring. A free 15-minute call is always the simplest place to start.
